Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about the Brick Buff Cleaning Kit, our method, shipping, and returns.
The Kit
The Brick Buff Toy & Collectible Cleaning Kit includes 8 tools designed specifically for toys, collectibles, and display builds:
- Surface Brush — Remove loose dust without scratching
- Detail Brush — Reach fine features and tight joints
- Crevice Brush — Clean hard-to-reach recessed areas
- Finish Brush — Final polish for pristine displays
- Microfiber Cloth — Gentle, lint-free wiping
- Manual Air Blower — Moisture-free final dry
- Spray Bottle — Apply solutions safely
- Mesh Wash Bag — Optional water cleaning for loose pieces
Yes. The Brick Buff kit was designed with vintage sets in mind. The brushes use soft, anti-static bristles that lift dust without applying abrasive pressure on older, more brittle plastics.
We recommend starting with the Surface Brush at minimal pressure on vintage sets, and avoiding water or solutions unless you're cleaning loose individual pieces (not assembled builds).
Absolutely. The kit works well on any display collectible with similar care needs — action figures, model kits, diecast vehicles, plush displays, and other plastic or resin collectibles.
The brushes and tools are material-agnostic. The main consideration is always: start dry, use light pressure, and avoid water on assembled displays.
The current kit does not include a pre-formulated cleaning solution — this is intentional. For most assembled display sets, dry cleaning is always the safest approach.
The Spray Bottle included in the kit is for use with mild, diluted soap and water when cleaning loose, disassembled pieces. We never recommend spraying solutions directly onto assembled builds.

Cleaning & Care
For display-only sets, we recommend a light surface sweep every 2–4 weeks. A full 5-step clean every 1–2 months is usually sufficient for most display environments.
If your builds are in a high-traffic room, near HVAC vents, or are frequently handled, increase the frequency. The goal is preventive maintenance — light, regular care is always safer than infrequent deep cleaning.

No — we strongly recommend against washing assembled display builds. Submerging or spraying water on assembled sets can:
- Trap moisture between bricks, leading to spotting and residue
- Cause structural loosening over time
- Damage printed elements, stickers, and decorated parts
- Lead to mold growth in tightly packed areas
Water should only be used on loose, disassembled pieces. Use the included Mesh Wash Bag to keep small pieces contained during water cleaning.
Avoid these on assembled or display LEGO sets:
- Alcohol-based cleaners — can crack and yellow plastic over time
- Bleach or harsh disinfectants — damage colors and printed elements
- Abrasive sponges or paper towels — create micro-scratches on brick surfaces
- High-pressure compressed air — can dislodge small elements and force dust deeper
- Furniture polish or silicone sprays — leave residue that attracts more dust
Stick to dry brushing for assembled builds. For loose bricks, mild dish soap and cool water is all you need.
Yellowing in older LEGO bricks is caused by plastic oxidation — typically from UV exposure or flame retardants in the ABS plastic. This is a different issue from dust, and requires specific treatment.
The Brick Buff kit is designed for dust removal and maintenance, not yellowing restoration. For yellowing, the "retrobright" method (hydrogen peroxide + UV exposure) is commonly used by the collector community — but it carries its own risks and is outside the scope of regular cleaning.
We'll be publishing a dedicated guide on this topic soon.

About Brick Buff
Brick Buff is a premium care brand built for adult collectors — people who display, maintain, and take pride in the things they've built and collected.
We were founded by collectors who were frustrated by the lack of purpose-built care tools for toys and collectibles. The Cleaning Kit is our first product, and it reflects everything we wish we'd had when we started collecting. Read our full story →
